Leadership Post Graduation: Fulbright Foreign Student Program
One program that I have had interest in and have done research and work through the University and the program itself is the Fulbright Foreign Student Program. Their mission is to provide foreign citizens to the United States for graduate study at U.S. universities. These students apply for fellowships through Fulbright which allows them to get sponsors and grants for their travel, stay, and education.
One of the primary challenges facing the program is how to provide access to resources and support for these prospective students. Many of these applicants are coming from underrepresented or economically disadvantaged backgrounds, making it more difficult for them to go through these processes alone. Language barriers and cultural differences can further intensify these difficulties and make it hard for students to integrate into their new academic environments. Candidates also may be worried about applying for these programs and studying abroad because they are worried about the finances associated with it such as travel, living expenses, and tuition. This problem may deter talented candidates from applying.
Another challenge is the knowledge that students have about these programs. Many might be aware but not fully understand what it is and if they are eligible for it. In some regions, this information might not be widespread therefore leading to a lack of diversity in the program. Without these diverse perspectives, the program may not be able to achieve its goals of fostering international understanding.
To address these challenges, I want to tackle a few different things. First, I would propose the development of localized workshops and information sessions in partnership with educational institutions and community organizations in underserved regions. I believe that the program would also benefit from a greater online presence. Through the creation of accessible online resources such as instructional videos, FAQs, and interactive forums. Prospective applicants can receive this information very easily to help them understand the program.
My role in this solution after I graduate includes getting involved closely in the Fulbright Foreign Student program. I plan to collaborate with the Fulbright Commission and relevant universities to organize such workshops and information programs. I would also like to get involved in the development of digital resources and social media campaigns to further the reach of the program.
I will use the knowledge that I have gained through my experience studying abroad and going through the process, as well as my experience with international students who have traveled to the U.S. The International Business program and my classes and experience brought me so much knowledge that I would like to use for the betterment of the international student community. I aim to use this knowledge to advocate for these students and share success stories and data on the positive impacts that have been made through these programs and through developing diversity.
